Does Exercise Lower Blood Pressure Even If You Are Not Overweight?
You have high blood pressure but other than that you think you are in pretty fit condition. So can exercise lower blood pressure even if you are not over weight? The short answer is yes.
Sure there's the obvious benefit of losing weight with regular exercise if you are over weight, but that's just a happy side effect not the real value of exercise lowering blood pressure. When you do daily mild aerobic exercise like walking or cycling, you are actually training your blood vessels to expand and contract.
As you exercise and get your heart rate up your pressure will go up as well. That increased pressure will try to expand your blood vessels. Healthy blood vessels are elastic and they expand when pressure is increased and contract when the heart rests between beats. This is the normal way to maintain blood pressure. But you've had this condition for years and your vessels are probably stiff.
Think about that for a moment. If you have a natural slim build but you lead a sedentary life style, your blood vessels could be just as stiff and hardened as an obese person. Like any other part of the body, if you don't exercise your cardio vascular system it simply is not going to work as designed.
But doing daily exercise is a way to bring your vessels back. During the workout you try to expand the vessels by elevating pressure, and then after the workout pressure decreases and the vessels are encouraged to contract. Do this often enough and you are well on your way to reducing your overall BP.
Exercising also has some immediate effects as well. Firstly, when your pressure drops after the workout, it will drop as much as 4 points lower than when you started. This effect can last up to 22 hours. Next, the workout will burn off stress hormones that have built up in your body. Losing that adrenalin and adding a healthy dose of endorphins will make you feel better and give you a much more positive outlook on life. Exercise is a great stress killer.
So even if you're skinny there is much to be gained from regular exercise. If you couple this healthy habit along with the other lifestyle changes recommended by the American Heart Association, you'll not only control your pressure you can reverse it and get back to normal.

Blood Lure - An Anna Pigeon Novel by Nevada Barr
"Blood Lure" by Nevada Barr is the ninth book in her Anna Pigeon series. Anna is a park ranger with the United States National Park Service. Each book in the series takes place in a different National Park, where Anna is involved in solving a murder mystery.
Park Ranger Anna Pigeon is at Glacier National Park assisting in a grizzly bear DNA project. She's hiking the backcountry with Joan Rand the biologist who is overseeing the groundbreaking project and Rory Van Slyke, a young man from Earthwatch, an independent environmental organization. They're collecting bear DNA caught in traps, dismantling the traps and setting them up in new locations. The new traps are covered with blood and fish guts and left for a few weeks for further collection.
After a grueling day they set up their tents and settle in for some shut eye but before long they're woken by roars, thumps and the sound of ripping fabric. When everything calms down the two women emerge to find the campsite ransacked and Rory missing. The search is on for a crazed bear and a young man but instead they find the body of a dead woman. And it appears she's been murdered by human hands. Hikers find Rory in the woods and call for help. He's disoriented and claims the bear frightened him off. It turns out that the dead woman is his stepmother. Did he kill her? The park is short handed and Anna is enlisted to help with the investigation.
Anna Pigeon is a great character who grows and changes in each book but the Park is the main focus in this story. I enjoyed the wonderful descriptions of scenery and nature but too many details about the Bear DNA project made the beginning drag. The pace picks up after the murdered woman is found. Although not as exciting as some of her other adventures the mystery has some twists and turns that kept me reading. Barr left plenty of clues and forensic evidence but I never saw the end coming.

9 Easy Ways to Lower Your Blood Pressure Naturally
So your blood pressure is high, but you don't want to take prescription drugs? Can't say I blame you, with what we've learned about some very popular pharmaceuticals over the last year or so. Well, you're in luck. There are some simple modifications you can incorporate into your lifestyle that can make a big difference when it comes to hypertension, and here are the top 9:
1. Eliminate salt from your diet. This is probably the most important change you can make. The main reason why you will hear people say "I tried cutting back on salt and it didn't do anything for my high blood pressure" is because they forgot about prepared convenience foods. If you start reading labels, you'll find that just about all these items (not just salty foods like chips and crackers) have added sodium. Really, if you want to cut way back on salt, the best way is just to eliminate anything that comes in a box or bag from your diet. Eat natural foods, which will help your health in many ways in addition to lowering your blood pressure.
2. Cut out white sugar. While scientists aren't yet sure exactly why, many studies have shown that eating processed sugars elevates blood pressure. Also eliminate high fructose corn syrup, an ubiquitous sweetener that has even more detrimental effects on health than white sugar. 5. Eat those veggies. There are myriad other benefits besides the increase in fiber associated with an increased intake of vegetables. These provide important vitamins and minerals, and other more recently discovered substances such as phytonutrients and antioxidants, which all help to keep your body functioning at an optimal level. One valuable nutrient contained in vegetables is potassium, and so our next tip is to....
6. Eat lots of bananas. Everyone knows that bananas are high in potassium, and it turns out that increasing the amount of potassium in our diet is almost as important as reducing one's salt intake with respect to normalizing blood pressure. As a matter of fact, some authorities think it's actually less about the amount of salt and more about increasing the ratio of potassium to sodium. We've mentioned bananas because they're the most popular fruit in the USA and are widely available, but if you want some high potassium alternatives, try dried apricots, figs, avocados, cantaloupe, raisins, carrot juice, prune juice, peanuts, and almonds.
7. Get that folic acid. This nutrient's been found to have a number of health benefits for women, and protecting against high blood pressure now seems to be another one. Harvard Medical School did a study which indicated that women could lower their risk of hypertension anywhere from 18% to 46%, depending on their age, by taking 1 mg (milligram) of folic acid per day.
8. Eat chocolate, but not too much. Some recent studies have indicated that 100 grams per day of dark chocolate can have blood pressure lowering effects. The researchers postulate that a component of dark chocolate known as flavinols is responsible. But remember, only 100 grams (around three or four ounces), and it needs to be dark chocolate. You'll need to read labels, because most chocolate candy these days uses light chocolate. And of course, chocolate always contains sugar. So if you can't stop at 100 grams, or you need to lose weight (100 grams of chocolate is usually around 500 calories) you'd probably be better off not to take that first bite.
