Acceptable Blood Glucose Levels May Vary, Understand Them and Stay in Control

We have often heard doctors advising diabetics to ensure that blood glucose levels are normal. In other words it is very important to maintain acceptable blood glucose levels. The concentration of blood sugar in a mammal's blood is the blood glucose level, which is usually expected to be in a reference range between 4mmol/L and 6mmol/L. Levels higher than that range are a cause of concern and need medication as per doctor's advice. Failure to maintain normal levels leads to hyperglycemia (higher level) or hypoglycemia (lower level). Acceptable blood sugar levels cannot be specific values, and your doctor would be the best person to answer what is safe for you depending upon your health status.

Normal values of blood glucose level

The blood glucose level varies at different times of the day. In most humans you would normally find the levels within a range of 80mg/dL to 110mg/dl i.e. 3.9 to 6.0mmol/L. The level goes up temporarily shortly after eating up to maybe 140mg/dL. The level is on a lower side in the early morning before you have your first meal.

Blood sugar tests and their normally acceptable blood glucose levels

* Fasting blood sugar test: The fasting blood sugar test is conducted after you fast for at least eight hours. The normal range for this test is 70 to 100mg/dL or 3.9 to 5.6mmol/L.
* Random blood sugar test: This test is conducted to measure blood sugar at any point in time of the day. Though there is no specific level defined, the sugar level should not be acceptable if higher than 200mg/dL i.e. 11.1mmol/L.
* Oral glucose tolerance test: This test measures the response of your body to sugar intake. First the fasting blood sugar level is measured. Then you are given a sugary solution and your blood sugar level is measured after 1 hour and then after 2 hours after you have the solution. This test is often used to screen pregnant women for gestational diabetes. The normal sugar level for this test is lower than 141mg/dL i.e. 7.8mmol/L.
* A1C test (glycated hemoglobin): This test is used to gauge how well you are managing your diabetes. This test is used to measure your average blood sugar for the past two to three months. It shows what percentage of hemoglobin is sugar coated (glycated). The acceptable level for non diabetics is 4 to 6 percent. For the diabetics the normal acceptable level is lower than 7 percent. Doctors may recommend it to be 6% during pregnancy. The level more than 7 may indicate a change to your diabetes treatment plan.

It is very important to know the higher values as well. There can be different reasons for higher levels other than diabetes, like severe stress, heart attack, stroke, medicines like corticosteroids or excess production of growth hormone. Doctors may advice you to take different tests to find if you have diabetes. Usually the criteria is fasting blood glucose level of 126 mg/dL i.e. 7.0mmol/L or higher, for oral glucose tolerance test of 200 mg/dL i.e. 11.1mmol/L and other symptoms of diabetes like frequent urination, unexplained weight loss and increase in appetite, fatigue etc.

The acceptable blood glucose levels may vary depending upon your diabetes and other health conditions. Your doctor would be the best person to express the most acceptable levels. Ensure that you regularly test your sugar level and take due care, medication, exercises, and diet control to keep it within the acceptable range.

Drink lots of water because it is calorie free and helps to flush away the toxins. Flavored water, an excellent healthy drink for diabetics! Broken Blood Vessels Cause Dark Circles Under Eyes

Millions of people have dark circles under eyes. Most have inherited the color and characteristics of their lower eyelid from their parents. Dark circles under eyes often appear during childhood, many people telling me they first noticed their dark circles when they were 9 or 10 years old.

There are many causes of dark circles under eyes, but in this article I am going to focus on broken blood vessels, small vascular (blood vessel) structures in the lower eyelid skin. Broken blood vessels are the easiest cause of dark circles under eyes to treat and correct.

How Broken Blood Vessels Cause Dark Circles under Eyes?

Actually what most people call broken blood vessels are not really broken blood vessels. What most people see are visible blood vessels (vascular structures) on the skin in areas that they do not expect to see blood vessels. These small vessels are arterioles, venules, and capillaries. Arterioles carry fresh blood to the skin and venules take old blood away from the skin, back to the heart and lungs to be refreshed with oxygen. Capillaries connect the arterioles and venules.

Normally blood vessels are deeper in the skin and not visible. Visible or broken blood vessels become noticeable in the following situations:

o Thin Skin- The eyelid skin is the thinnest skin in the body. The eyelid skin is only 1/6 the thickness of the skin on the rest of the face. The skin is so thin that you can see through it. You can actually see the small arterioles and venules in the skin of the eyelid. These same structures are present in all skin but are not visible in thicker skin elsewhere in the body. The lower eyelid muscle is purple, and this color is visible through the eyelid skin. That is why all lower eyelids have a darker color. This color is what most people refer to as dark circles under eyes.

o Telangiectasias or Spider Veins- The arterioles, venules and capillaries in dark circles under the eyes can be dilated or enlarged a condition called telangiectasia or often referred to as spider veins. Telangiectasias are most often caused by heredity. However, aging, pregnancy, use of topical steroid cream, excessive exertion such as weight lifting, and Rosacea also can cause telangiectasia.

o Aging and Inflammation- Ultraviolet radiation and other skin aging factors produce inflammation or irritation of the skin, especially the thin skin around the eyes. When eyelid skin is inflamed, new arterioles, venules and capillaries vessels grow into the skin to repair the damage. These new structures stay in the skin and are visible. The presence of these vascular structures darkens the color of the lower eyelid skin and can appear as dark circles under eyes.

How to Remove Dark Circles under Eyes Caused by Broken Blood Vessels

Lasers can remove Telangiectasias, and small vascular structures under the eyes, but newer light based treatments are safer and better. The newer technique called Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or photo facial is a much gentler procedure that is very effective and does not leave marks or white areas under the eye, a major problem with older laser techniques.

o IPL- Photo Facial-Intense pulsed light (IPL) is not a laser. IPL uses a bright flash of visible light which is tuned to be absorbed by the specific color of blood. The light passes through the skin without injuring the skin and is preferentially absorbed by the blood in the small Telangiectasias, venules, arterioles and capillaries. The light energy causes the blood to boil and the heat causes the wall of the structure to shrink and close. The process takes about 6 weeks.

Usually 3 IPL treatments scheduled 6 weeks apart are required to lighten the color of the skin causing the dark circle under the eye. Eye shields must be placed on the eye to protect the eye from the light. IPL is the best treatment for Rosacea.

o Laser- Two laser wavelengths are specifically absorbed by blood -the 532nm and 1064nm laser wavelengths. The 1064nm laser is usually too strong to be used on the eyelids. The 532nm laser is the one more commonly used on the lower eyelids. However, because the laser is so strong, the eyelid skin is often damaged and a scar or white area on the eyelid skin can occur.

Since IPL has been developed, the laser is no longer the choice for treating the eyelids. Eye shields must be placed on the eye to protect the eye from the laser.

o Vein Injections- Very large and noticeable veins on the lower eyelid can be closed by injecting a sclerosing solution that is most commonly used on the lower legs to treat spider veins. This is a very tricky procedure and should only be done by an expert experienced in this technique.

o Fractional laser resurfacing to thicken skin- New fractional laser resurfacing techniques are safe to use on the eyelids with eye protective shields in place. These new fractional laser techniques plump or thicken the lower eyelid skin and lighten the color. Thicker lower eyelid skin helps camouflage the vessels and Telangiectasias.

Prevention
Inherited eyelid skin color cannot be prevented. However there are things we can do to prevent new telangiectasia and vascular structures from forming and making the skin color darker. Since Ultraviolet radiation from the sun causes inflammation and new vascular growth, sun protection is the most important.

o Sun block- Always make sure that you apply sun block to the eyelids when you apply sun block to your face.

o Eye protection-Always wear protective sunglasses that cover the crow's feet areas as well as the eyes.

o Anti-inflammatory-Medical grade topical Vitamin C Serum is a powerful anti-inflammatory medication. Its use on the face and eyelids can help reduce inflammation which can cause telangiectasia and new vascular growth on the facial and eyelid skin.

If you are not happy with the color of your lower eyelids, IPL may be the answer you are looking for.

Average Blood Sugar Level

Average blood sugar level amounts are determined by a few factors. This article will list what those factors are and how to determine whether your body is operating with a normal blood glucose level and what you might expect for changes during the day.

Your blood glucose level usually starts out on the lower side in the morning and rises and falls during the day - primary due to your food intake. Food that is consumed that contains carbohydrates are converted to energy by the hormone insulin which is produced by the pancreas. As your body gets low on energy, blood sugar amounts in the bloodstream rise until insulin does its job. Once the the glucose is converted, blood glucose levels decrease to a more stable level. Within a few hours, however as the body needs more energy, the glucose levels are once again on the rise. Glucose levels stay at a higher level until once again another round of food and nutrients are consumed. Such is the cycle of someone with average blood sugar level amounts.

Problems occur, however when the body does not produce enough insulin to convert the glucose. As a result, the glucose stays in the bloodstream and can wreak havoc in the body if the condition of high glucose amounts persist. The average person who is not at risk for diabetes has a blood glucose level between 75 and 150 mg. This can also vary from person to person based on their weight and the amount of physical activity that he or she has in their life.

Origin of HIV, or Where Does HIV Come From?

Where does HIV come from? For some of us who remember the sudden emergence of HIV into the popular culture and awareness of the US in the early 1980's, HIV appears to have come from nowhere. Rumor swirled about where it came from, how it came to infect people from all walks of life around the world. It's only now, after over 25 years of research and discovery that we can finally start to say with some confidence where HIV came from. Science. 2000 Jun 9;288(5472):1789-96. How to Keep a Normal Blood Pressure

The dangerous thing about most medical conditions that relate to the heart, such as high blood pressure, are that there are often no symptoms that indicate a problem. The only way to know if your heart is healthy is to see a doctor once a year for a checkup.

Getting a blood pressure reading is imperative in diagnosing high blood pressure. If you haven't had your blood pressure taken before the procedure is painless, non-invasive, and easy.

Basically, the nurse on hand will wrap a cuff around your arm, inflate it and then deflate it, while listening to your heartbeat. What they are looking to determine is the force of the blood circulating through the blood vessels.

There are two numbers in a blood pressure reading and these numbers indicate the force of the blood upon entry and exit from your heart. These numbers are termed systolic and diastolic.

When the nurse or your doctor writes the down the reading it will look like a fraction. The systolic number will be on top while the diastolic number will be on the bottom.

What Is A Normal Blood Pressure Reading?

A normal blood pressure reading is below 120/80. There is a condition that is called pre-hypertensive and it has readings that range from 120/80 up to 139/89. Stage one hypertension is will have a blood pressure reading of 140/90 up to 159/99. Stage two hypertension will show a reading over 160/100.

How To Maintain Normal Blood Pressure

There are many ways to maintain normal blood pressure, but most importantly you need to get regular exercise (30 min. - 1hr a day). Regular exercise will help keep you fit and will give your heart the workout that it needs. Exercising regularly also maintains the flow of your circulatory system thus eliminating any artery clogging or build up that can cause heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.

To maintain a normal blood pressure level you also want to eat a diet of organic food (mostly fruit, vegetables and nuts). Minimize the amount of processed food that you eat.

Not only is processed food fattening and addictive it is also made with chemicals (read the ingredients) that are foreign to the human body. These foods leave you at high risk for things like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

Stop Smoking And Lower Your Stress

Smoking can also contribute to high blood pressure so stop. Stress is also a big contributor to high blood pressure, and most medical conditions for that matter, so you need to learn how to lower the amount of stress in your life if you want to be healthy.

Take up yoga or tai chi, exercise regularly, learn to meditate, eat right, and you will conquer stress. This is very important as to lower your susceptibility to hypertension; you must learn to handle stress properly. Good luck on your journey towards health and wellness!

Foods Good For High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

It seems that doctors the world over are all too ready to prescribe medication rather than to suggest natural methods of lowering high blood pressure (hypertension). Most of these medicines can have undesirable side-effects, so it is wise to look for natural methods.

It has been shown that a healthy diet containing high levels of potassium, magnesium and calcium can lower and help control high blood pressure. Just as important, a healthy diet should include essential fatty acids, but as little as possible saturated fats, salt and sugar. Below is just a short list of foods good for high blood pressure.

SPINACH Spinach is rich in magnesium and helps prevent heart disease. It also contains folate which protects the body from homocysteine, an excessive amount of which can cause heart attacks and strokes. Cook for as little time as possible. Better still, eat raw in salads.

SUNFLOWER SEEDS Sunflower seeds are rich in potassium, magnesium and phytosterols which can aid in the reduction of your cholesterol level. (High levels of cholesterol can cause narrowing of the arteries and blood vessels which raises blood pressure).

BANANAS Bananas are rich in potassium and have a high fiber content. Try to eat at least two bananas per day.

SOME FATS ARE GOOD! Unsaturated fats can help reduce cholesterol and provide essential fatty acid that the body needs. Fish contain omega-3 which prevents heart disease. Try eating oily fish such as trout, salmon and mackerel. It will be a lot healthier for you if you grill, bake or steam the fish. Do not add salt when cooking. Sardines, too, are a good choice. Fresh fish are best, but if you must buy tinned fish check the label to make sure the salt content is low.

GARLIC Garlic helps thin the blood and stops blood vessels clogging, so reducing blood pressure. Try chewing a clove or two of garlic each day. If you don't want to lose all your friends you may prefer to take it in the form of a supplement.

TOMATOES Tomatoes are rich in calcium and potassium, and contain vitamins A, C and E. Tomatoes also contain lycopene which is a powerful antioxidant that is reputed to lower the risk of heart disease. The antioxidants found in tomatoes can prevent LDL cholesterol from oxidizing and sticking to the blood vessel walls, which would raise blood pressure. Drinking tomato juice is a great way to enjoy tomatoes. If you own a juicer, make your own. If you have to buy tomato juice make sure it's a pure juice with no added salt or sugar.

BROCCOLI Broccoli is full of nutrition. Not only is it high in potassium but it contains chromium that helps regulate blood sugar and insulin. Don't over cook it. Place it in a pan with just enough water to cover it, that way it will retain more nutrients. Better still, steam it. When I'm preparing broccoli I always cut off a few florets and eat them raw. Try it, they're delicious!

HAWTHORN Hawthorn dilates the arteries and improves the flow of blood, so lowering blood pressure. Use a mixture of leaves and flowers to make a tea. Place two teaspoonfuls in a cup and add boiling water. Leave to infuse for around twenty minutes before straining. Drink two or three cups of the elixir per day.

How to Use Grapefruit to Lower High Blood Pressure

Heart disease is the number one killer of women. If you are a women, and even if your not, here is what you need to start doing.

The food you eat is critical in determining if you will have high blood pressure and if you can lower it. Eating less meat and eating more fruits and vegetables can lower your blood pressure.

High blood pressure occurs when fats, cholesterol, and nutrients in the food you eat start to accumulate along your artery walls. This narrowing of your arteries restricts the flow of your blood, increases your blood pressure and making you more susceptible to heart attacks and strokes.

If you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or high trigylcerides, grapefruit has been found to reduce the effects of these conditions.

So which is better yellow or red grapefruit? Well, in a study made where people who had a history of high cholesterol, those that ate the red grapefruit had the most effect in lower their blood pressure. The yellow also lowered blood pressure but not as much as the red grapefruit.

It was found in this study that grapefruit had a better effect in lowering blood pressure than statin drugs.

Red grapefruit are extra high in anti-oxidants and these nutrients are able to reduce your trigylcerides: the yellow are not.

Eat the red grapefruit when available and when it is not eat the yellow. Eat at least one - two per day. If you eat ½ just before your meal or drink a glass of fresh grapefruit, you can expect to lose 1 or 2 lbs during the month. By eating 2 grapefruits a day expect to lose more weight.

Eating grapefruit has many health benefits, but one other is in controlling your insulin level. Studies have shown that those that eat grapefruits have lower insulin and glucose levels in their blood.

It is believed by researchers that grapefruit enzymes help to control insulin increases that happen after you eat. These enzymes help digest your food better and this results in less nutrients being stored as fat.

Grapefruit has also been found to be caner preventative. It's the phytonutrients - antioxidants - and especially lycopene that has been found helpful in preventing cancer.

Grapefruits are high in fiber, vitamin C, Vitamin A, and antioxidants - carotenoids, limonoid glucosides, flavonones.

You can buy red and yellow grapefruits from November to May here in the US. If you don't have any in your area go online and order some.

CAUTION: If you are on any drugs, do not eat grapefruits in combination with taking drugs. Grapefruit enhances the effect of drugs and can cause symptoms of overdose.

Artificial Blood

Better known as blood surrogates/substitutes, artificial blood serves two main purposes like filling the fluid volume and carry oxygen and other gases in blood through the entire cardiovascular system. It should be noted that nothing could replace the human blood since it performs innumerable other functions apart from these. So the accurate term for the product performing first function could be volume expanders and the gas carriers could be named Oxygen therapeutics.

In simple words, Volume expanders are certain passive materials which raise the blood quantity. They are of two types, mainly colloid based like Voluven, Haemaccel, gelofusin etc. and crystalloid based where Ringer's lactate, normal saline are examples. The case of Oxygen Therapeutics, they function as a substitute for the oxygen carrying ability of the body fluid. Common examples are Hemopure, Oxygent, PolyHeme and Perftoran. Depending on the mode of the transport mechanism, Oxygen therapeutics fall into two main streams called per fluorocarbon based and hemoglobin based.

Volume expanders are common and easily obtained in markets and they are mainly used for first aid and in case of trauma. Consider the case of trauma and when there is a loss of blood, there arises a necessity to prevent blood loss. Another requirement is the substitution of lost amount of body fluid. And the remaining RBC's can provide oxygen for the tissues.

Oxygen Therapeutics is employed to imitate the oxygen carrying ability of normal blood. But the modern science find it difficult to develop a completely efficient therapeutic and hence two fundamental approaches has been installed to assemble an oxygen therapeutic. Now, per fluorocarbons (PFCs) a chemical compound that transports and gives out oxygen is made use of. The frequently used PFC is per fluorodecalin. Their main property is that it will not get assorted with blood and hence there arises a need to produce emulsions that are made by dispersing minute droplets of PFC in water. This emulsion is then mixed with antibiotics, vitamins, nutrients and also salts, thus making an emulsion that consists of some 80 different types of constituents and that will perform a lot of the important purposes of body fluid. They are just 1/40 the size of the diameter of the Red Blood Cells and this minute structure will help them to seep into the very minute and dead capillaries where normal blood flow is almost absent. The per fluorocarbon solutions can transport oxygen; hence the mammals and human beings could survive by just breathing the liquid per fluorocarbon solution, termed the liquid breathing.

It is to be noted that 33% of the entire Red blood cell mass is consisted by the Hemoglobin. The Hemoglobin-associated materials are termed HBOCs (Hemoglobin Based Oxygen Carriers). As red blood cell contains certain other substances other than the hemoglobin it is quite difficult to extract hemoglobin alone from blood. If used, it will end up in a condition called renal toxicity which could be considered fatal. By making use of the following processes like self linking, polymerization and encapsulation hemoglobin could be extracted and could be used in a safer way too. Fluosol-DA-20, the only approved HBOC by Food and drug Administration, is now banned with its least success and the increase in the number of side effects.

The artificial blood seems advantageous in different walks of life. As discussed earlier, the small size of oxygen therapeutics will seem superior to normal body fluid and hence it could lessen the number of transfusions which is being increasing day by day.

If such a system is employed nobody needs to become much fearful about the hazards during a blood transfusion like the spreading of AIDS and anthrax viruses.

In case of trauma or in certain battlefields the blood surrogates or the blood substitutes find wide varieties of applications. In future, let's hope that no patient dies due to unavailability of blood.

The main advantage of blood substitutes is that it could be stored for much longer time as compared to the transfused blood. It is capable of using at anytime with a tension free mind.

The major merit of artificial blood is that it supports instantaneous full capability for the transport of oxygen, a contradiction to blood which is transfused that need some 24 hours to arrive at complete oxygen transport ability because of the depletion of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate.

Blood Pressure Monitor Cuff Review - Don't Buy Until You Read This

A blood pressure monitor cuff is a part of a medical device that is used to check an individual's blood pressure. This is important because both high and low blood pressure can be a sign of a more serious medical problem. A blood pressure monitor consists of a cuff to restrict blood flow and a manometer, which is used to show the pressure. The restricting of the blood flow is done so that the device can read the pressure, so the cuff is a vital part of this entire operation. Many times, this is used at the same time as a stethoscope, so that a measurement on the pressure can be taken when there is restriction and when there is no restriction.

In order to use a blood pressure monitor, the actual cuff is placed around the person's arm somewhat tightly. It must be tight enough to get a good reading and at times this can be uncomfortable. The arm must be at the same place on the body as the heart, so the person is usually seated and the arm must be raised and supported. This is why the blood pressure monitors that you see in a pharmacy come with a seat and a raised tube, as the arm must be placed into the cuff at heart level. It is also very important that the correct size of cuff be used on each individual person. If the cuff is too small, it will restrict blood flow too much, which will cause the reading to be inaccurate and, in most cases, too high. Likewise, if the cuff is too large, the reading will appear to be much lower than it actually is.

The cuff will be inflated until the artery has been completely closed. The doctor can then slowly release this pressure while using a stethoscope to listen to the brachial artery. When the pressure is released, the blood flow will start once again, which is recorded by the doctor as well. This noise can be heard by the doctor in his or her office, but if you are in a louder location, it can be much more difficult to hear and the pulse rate is simply felt by the doctor. In either case, this is the most common way to take a person's blood pressure, as it is very accurate.

The reason why a blood pressure monitor cuff is such a significant piece of equipment is because it can help measure elements of a cardiac cycle. All the examiner has to do is look at the manometer, which can be either mercury or digital, and he or she will have an idea of the pressure that is being released. There are many different health conditions that can be noticed by a it, so it is vital that one of these items is around in every doctor's office and it can also be important for anyone with a background in first aid to have around, just in case a problem arises.

An increasing number of people are now choosing to keep one around the home, as it is a great way to monitor blood pressure, especially for those who are in a high risk bracket. For example, an individual who has suffered a stroke in the past will be asked by a doctor to constantly monitor his or her blood pressure. This is because once the BP gets too high, there is an increased chance of another stroke occurring. It can be a major hassle for these people to get to the pharmacy every few days to have this done, so keeping at least one device at home is probably the best way to go about it.

Another way in which it can come in handy around the house is if an individual is taking blood pressure medication. Sometimes, certain environmental issues can cause this medication to stop working, as no medication is perfect. If you have a monitor around the house, you will be able to tell if this medication is not doing what it is supposed to be doing, which will allow the individual to get medical attention before it is too late. The complications that can arise from this medication being unsuccessful can be deadly, but having a monitor can help alert you that something is wrong before something major occurs.

Basically, this is a tool that is great to have around because any number of complications can be avoided or detected early as a result of a heart related problems. While this device is not a life saver on its own, it can definitely lead to a life being saved, especially if someone in your household is at a high risk for any sort of blood pressure problems. Those who have had heart attacks or strokes, in particular, can benefit from having an Omron blood pressure monitor cuff around their homes, just in case they feel as though something is wrong. Knowing that there is a problem with your blood pressure can make the decision to go to the hospital easier, which can be important if something is ever seriously wrong. You can find a blood pressure monitor cuff in many different styles, price ranges, and colors, so the choice is truly up to you when you decide which one you use.
